Huck Expands With New Editorial Hires

March 3rd, 2016

News and Deputy Editors with Vice, The Indy and Irish Times experience join the team. Huck has expanded its award-winning editorial team with Michael Segalov joining as News Editor, and Cian Traynor as Deputy Editor. Segalov will oversee the daily conversation on the youth culture brand’s digital channels, while Cian will focus primarily on Huck’s bi-monthly magazine.

Segalov draws on years of investigative journalism experience, including ground-breaking work for The Independent, Vice, Dazed, Refinery29, The Guardian, and Buzzfeed News. His approach to finding fresh angles on stories was illustrated by a piece he did for Vice challenging Nigel Farage’s claim that HIV-positive “health tourists” cost the NHS millions. Segalov interviewed a series of foreign-born HIV-positive patients to show a different story. He brings with him an engaged network of journalists at the forefront of youth culture and activism.

Traynor joins the team after five years as a journalist at The Irish Times and over a decade of freelance writing (The Financial Times, NME, The Guardian, MOJO, Little White Lies). With a talent for colourful feature writing and intimate interviews (David Lynch, John Lydon, Cat Power, Ice Cube, John Cale and hundreds more), Cian will be circling back to his independent publishing roots as the former Deputy Editor of cult music publication The Stool Pigeon. His work has included an in-depth investigation into Scientology and the overlooked deaths of young men in Dublin. Segalov and Traynor join TCOLondon’s 30-strong team of journalists, producers, filmmakers, designers and editors spanning Huck and Little White Lies, as well as agency TCOLondon for Brands.

Publisher Vince Medeiros says: These guys are awesome. They add depth to a team that’s hungry for breaking stories. They signal our commitment to original reporting, to counter-narratives—and to being an innovative, premium voice across youth media. They join a team led by Editor-in-Chief Andrea Kurland, who has shaped Huck’s dynamic worldview and Medeiros, Huck’s Founder and former Editor at California’s Surfing Magazine. The editorial board also includes Editor-at-Large Michael Fordham (former Editor of Adrenalin, former Features Editor at Dazed), Contributing Editor Jamie Brisick (former pro-surfer, author and filmmaker), Head of Content D’Arcy Doran (former correspondent for AP, AFP and Reuters) and Head of Production Isabel Freeman (Producer and Editor of feature documentary Stephanie in the Water and Associate Editor on Watchers of the Sky, winner of 2014 Sundance Special Jury Prize for Editing).
